What It Does¶
Add Shared Parameters to Family helps you add important data fields to your Revit family files. Instead of manually adding parameters one by one, this tool lets you select and add multiple parameters at once, saving you time and ensuring consistency across your family library.
Key Benefits¶
- Save Time: Add multiple parameters to families in seconds instead of minutes
- Stay Organized: Group related parameters together for easy management
- Reduce Errors: See parameter details before adding to avoid mistakes
- Work Faster: Quick selection and preview make the process simple

- Tips for Success
Keep Parameters Organized¶
- Group similar parameters together (e.g., all dimensions, all product info)
- Use clear, descriptive names that everyone will understand
- Add descriptions to help others know what each parameter is for
Before You Add Parameters¶
- Check if the parameter already exists in your family
- Make sure you're using the right shared parameters file
- Test on one family before applying to many
Working with Multiple Families¶
- Create a standard set of parameters for similar families
- Keep notes about which parameters go in which family types
- Test parameters work correctly before using in productionto avoid duplicates
- Test parameter behavior in different family contexts
- Document cus
Setting Up New Families¶
When creating new families, add standard company parameters: - Product information (manufacturer, model number, cost) - Warranty and maintenance details - Sustainability ratings - Custom specification fields
Updating Existing Families¶
Add missing information fields to families you already have: - Manufacturer contact information - Product URLs and datasheets - Performance data - Installation requirements
Standardizing Your Library¶
Make all similar families consistent: - Add the same parameters to all door families - Ensure all furniture has required product data - Update equipment families with maintenance info - Save and document changes - Track updated families for quality assurance
Tips and Tricks¶
Common Questions
Why isn't the parameter appearing in my family? - Make sure your shared parameters file is loaded in Revit - Check that the parameter type matches the family category - Verify the parameter group you selected exists
I see a duplicate parameter warning. What should I do? - A parameter with that name may already exist - Check if it's the same parameter or a different one - You may need to remove the old parameter first
Can I add parameters to any type of family? - Most family types work, but some parameters only work with certain categories - Test first if you're unsure
Use With Other Tools¶
After adding parameters, you can: - Use ParameterTransfer to copy values to these new parameters - Use RevitExtractor to export family data including new parameters - Use NeroSpec to check if parameters are filled in correctly
